Congrats, Corey!

Last Tuesday, the voters of Tempe went to the polls to elect a mayor (well… re-elect a mayor, as Hugh Hallman had no opposition) and three council-members. The blog team at YDAz.org would like to congratulate fellow Young Democrat Corey Woods, who will advance to the May general election. Although Corey did not receive enough votes to win outright in this primary, he received the second-most amount of votes out of all the candidates.

This is truly an amazing feat for the Woods campaign. Only two short years ago, Corey ran for Tempe City Council in what some called a “quixotic” bid due to his youth. Placing last only emboldened Corey to gain more community experience and try again in 2008. This time, his campaign was anything but quixotic.

Through hard-work and tremendous dedication, Corey Woods got more votes than long-time incumbent Hut Hutson, but fell short of the 50% plus one needed to win a seat in this primary. Fellow Democrat and incumbent councilman Mark Mitchell was the only candidate to cross that threshold. Corey will join Hutson, Julie Jakubek, and Joel Navarro in the upcoming general election, but only two of them will go on to sit on the Tempe City Council.

Given the results of last Tuesday’s election, Corey Woods is well-prepared going into the general election. I, for one, know the city of Tempe needs a young, energetic newcomer who can build coalitions and tackle local problems with creative solutions. We congratulate Corey, and urge Tempeans to vote for him on May 20!

  1. This was a great election not just because Corey and Joel did such a great job, and not just because they are well positioned for the general in May, but because of the sound rejection of Hugh Hallman.
He may have been reelected because he was the only one on the ballot, but his polices received quite a blow. Mark Mitchell, Joel Navarro, and our own YD; Corey Woods ran on responsible policies.
Those candidates that decided to push a reckless tax cutting policy favored by Republican Hugh Hallman got a message via a poor showing at the polls. People in Tempe want responsible policy represented at City Hall.
