YOUNG DEMOCRATS OF ARIZONA ELECT 2008 OFFICERS, IRAQ WAR VETERAN TO LEAD

Feb 15, 2008

Phoenix, AZ – Nearly 100 Young Democrats from across Arizona came together over the weekend in Flagstaff for the Young Democrats of Arizona 2008 State Convention. Held at Northern Arizona University on February 9th, Young Democrats concluded with the elections of 2008 state officers, including Sergeant Cole Hickman, US Army Reserve as President.

“We’re celebrating our 75th year in action and the excitement at this Convention was higher than ever” said Stan Williams, Arizona Executive Director with the Young Democrats of America. “This weekend is proof that we’re ready for this election regardless of the Republican nominee. John McCain isn’t getting a free ride in Arizona.”

The convention began on Saturday with a Congressional District 1 candidate forum, followed by planning sessions for local groups, with the keynote speech by former YDAZ President, and current Arizona Democratic Party Chair Don Bivens. “I can feel your excitement and you should be; young people are voting in record numbers, thanks to the work of the Young Democrats” said Bivens.

YDAZ President Cole Hickman said, “I am proud to be leading such a dynamic group in what is already an incredible year. On Super Tuesday, more young Democrats voted in Arizona than young Republicans, and we’ve seen this trend across the country. Young people clearly want a Democratic President, and it doesn’t matter how many times John McCain changes his positions on the issues, he’s not going to win young voters.”

Background:

YDAZ is the youth arm of the Arizona Democratic Party, working to build strong chapters and a solid youth voting bloc for Democrats statewide. As a chapter of the Young Democrats of America, YDAZ mobilizes young people under the age of 36 to participate in the electoral process, influence the ideals of the Democratic Party and develop the skills of the youth generation to serve as leaders at the local, state, and national level.
