It is despicable to see a student organization host (another) event fueled solely by hatred for immigrants on the main Arizona State University campus.
U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement have questioned or detained members of the Navajo Nation and U.S. citizens of Latino descent as part of President Trump's mass deportation efforts. Almost half of the deportations were of nonviolent offenders or people who have not committed any criminal offense other than crossing the border illegally. Being undocumented is considered a civil offense, not a crime.
According to President Michael Crow, "ASU is committed to inclusion - ethnic, intellectual, socioeconomic and cultural - and advancing knowledge that reflects the deepest possible grasp of broad perspectives."
The College Republicans website lists one of their core values as "Opposition to immigration and multiculturalism." It is clear that the goal of this event and the overall goal of College Republicans United at Arizona State is to silence the voices of students who are not white Christian Nationalists or who do not bend the knee to the Trump administration.
The Young Democrats of Arizona unequivocally condemn these actions. We believe schools are a place of learning. All students should be able to exist on campus without fear of deportation.
We ask ASU administration to condemn these actions and protect their students from this dangerous rhetoric. We ask President Crow directly to stand by his commitment to ethnic, intellectual, socioeconomic and cultural inclusion.
